Dear Families
Harmony Day
On Tuesday we gathered as a school community on Harmony Day, to celebrate and recognise our diversity as a community. Harmony Day is about inclusiveness, respect, and a sense of belonging for everyone.
It was wonderful to begin the day together and share a communal prayer and to witness the sea of orange in support of the day. Well done to everyone involved.
Year 6 Camp
This week our Year 6 students have been on camp to Wirraway Homestead in the Adelaide Hills. The children enjoyed participating in a range of activities including Horse Riding, Horsemanship, Sheep Herding, Archery, Bush Walking, Low Ropes, Shelter Building, Amazing Race and Whip Cracking. Well done to all the students involved and to the staff who assisted on the camp- Lauren Copeland, Melissa Gatto, Ethan Miller and Karina Overall.
Numeracy Coach - Megan Pratt
As some of you may be aware, I have been given the opportunity to take on the newly established Numeracy Coach role at St John the Baptist. In addition to teaching Year 4 (Monday – Wednesday), I will be working with students and teachers across all year levels in the areas of Mathematics and Numeracy (Thursday and Friday).
The objective of the Numeracy Coach role is to help raise the Mathematics and Numeracy profile and achievement at the school. As a staff, we will be focussing on developing a consistent, whole school approach to teaching Mathematics, including consistency in vocabulary, practices and strategies.
An area staff have been exploring this term has been worded problems in Mathematics. These problems feature heavily in NAPLAN and PAT testing. Performing well in such assessments requires more than a strong understanding of mathematical concepts. It requires confidence in interpreting and comprehending these questions. Our aim is to provide students with regular opportunities to practice a variety of problems and employing different strategies to problem solve to help students achieve greater confidence and success. Benefits will extend beyond NAPLAN results, as such problems provide students with the opportunity to apply mathematical concepts into real life contexts.
Prior to the commencement of the school year, Michael Cimarosti and myself attended a professional learning presented by Dr Paul Swan and Narelle Rice. Swan is a highly regarded figure in Mathematics Education in Australia. The day offered valuable insights to mathematics teaching and provided direction for my role as Numeracy Coach. As staff, we have begun to explore some of his resources. His website, https://drpaulswan.com.au/, has a range of articles and free downloadable games and activities for teachers and parents to use with students.
Annual General Meeting
The Annual General Meeting of the School Board will be held on Wednesday 29th March at 6:30pm in the John the Baptist Centre. All parents are most welcome to attend to hear various reports on the 2022 school year.
Learning Conversations
Learning Conversations will be held on Tuesday 4th and Wednesday 5th April. These are important conversations centred around your child’s learning in the early part of the 2023 school year. Information regarding how to book has been sent home. If you have missed any of the communication regarding how to book a conversation, please contact your child’s classroom teacher.
Easter Raffle
Each family will have received a letter from the Parents and Friends about the annual Easter Raffle. Please bring your donations to school in the coming weeks so they can be wrapped ready for the annual Easter raffle on Tuesday 4 April at 2.30pm.
Bunnings BBQ
The Parents and Friends will also be holding a BBQ at Bunnings Edwardstown on Sunday April 2. Please look out for the information from your child's class parent reps. If you can support on the day by volunteering time at the BBQ that would be greatly appreciated or visit Bunnings and support by purchasing a sausage or two.
Student Absences
If your child is going to be absent from school for any reason, we ask that you please contact the Front Office via phone (8218 3300) or text (0409 793 402). You can contact the school regarding an absence at any time of the day or night. The school requires absentee information as part of its reporting obligations. Thank you for your cooperation.
Best Wishes
The Leadership Team
Todd LaForgia, Jo Livingstone, Amanda Razon & Michael Cimarosti
Presentation Mass
Last Saturday and Sunday the children in the Sacramental Program were presented to the parish community. Please pray for the candidates as they journey through the year in preparation for their Reconciliation, Holy Communion and Confirmation.
Commissioning Mass
Alongside of the children being presented on Sunday, the St John the Baptist staff were sent forth in mission to support the school community. It was lovely to have both the staff and children from our school community at the Sunday Mass.
Feast Days
The Church calendar is filled with various important occasions, which include feast days. These are opportunities to look at the ways these individuals have shaped the life of the Church through the way they lived their life in the mission to share God’s love with others.
Last Friday and this Monday we celebrated two Saints feast days: St Patrick and St Joseph. The children participated in class liturgies and individual activities to explore their stories and why both were important figures of faith.
Harmony Day
Although we should always honor our cultural diversity in Australia, this week has placed a strong focus on the richness this brings to our country and community. On Tuesday we gathered for communal prayer as a school community. Our Year 6 leaders alongside other students, staff and parents lead the school in a liturgy to mark the celebration of Harmony Day. Students and staff were encouraged to wear a touch of orange to commemorate the occasion. Individual classes have continued to celebrate Harmony Day with class activities.
Project Compassion
In last week's Project Compassion story, we heard about Priscilla from Zimbabwe. The country is currently experiencing drought and food supplies are low. One project that Priscilla has supported is the rearing of chickens to aid families in her community, particularly as a source of food. In response to her story, our Year 6 Social Justice leaders, have created this year's Project Compassion fundraising focus to be: Which class can fundraise for the most chickens?
Every $7 raised = 1 chicken for a family to raise in Zimbabwe. A chart will be displayed in the school to track and show the progress of each class.
