Dear Families
Throughout this year we have broadened the opportunities for students through a number of new initiatives. Each of the opportunities provides the students a chance to connect with their peers, extend their areas of interest or try something new.
Year 4 AR/VR Lunch Club
Year 4 students are currently participating in a Virtual Reality/Augmented Reality lunch club trial over the next 5 weeks of the term. Each week the small group explore a new topic and are exposed to learning in an exciting way.
Year 5/6 Homework Club
Homework Club is available each Tuesday afternoon for students in Years 5 & 6. Students receive guidance to complete weekly homework tasks, ongoing projects or assignments and seek assistance to help understand subject content. Setting up good study habits are important as students move to secondary school and Homework club also aims to encourage students to take responsibility for their own learning.
Year 2 Art Club
Creative and artistic techniques are taught and developed in Art Club each Monday afternoon for students in Year 2. We are fortunate that Sienna, one of our Education Support Officers, has a gift and passion for design, drawing and art. The Hub, located in the new building is a perfect area for our young learners to get messy and have fun with art materials.
Year 5 Playgroup Support
The youngest members of our school community visit St John The Baptist Catholic School each Wednesday morning for Playgroup. Karina Overall is the Co-ordinator of the program and each week students from Year 5 help set up the space. The Year 5 students are also involved in supporting the children in play, singing songs, reading books and sharing in art activities. Beginning their leadership journey, these students are eager to participate and look forward to attending each week.
Games Club
Board games have become a popular lunch time activity this term. Students connect with one another from different year levels or classes and engage in practicing the skill of taking turns, building resilience in accepting the outcome of the game, laughing with each other and most importantly having fun.
Minecraft Club
For students that love technology, Minecraft Club is also available at lunch time each week. It is surprising to hear the noise in the hall where students are sharing their Minecraft worlds and showing each other how to construct things within their world.
Year 6 ArchD Radio Podcast
Podcasting is a new initiative for our Year 6 students. Each week students have had an expert from ArchD Radio visit and teach them the skills and processes in creating a podcast. Through this new learning students will create a podcast that will be uploaded to Spotify, Apple and iHeart Radio.
Year 6 Student Leadership
The eldest students in our school take on a many different leadership roles. Small groups of students from both classes work together to create new initiatives, support other students, share information and create a warm and welcoming school environment. Year 6 leaders have nominated to be a part of the following groups. Each Friday afternoon they spend time working in these groups.
- Sustainability Leaders
- Social Justice Leaders
- Library Leaders
- Junior Primary Support Leaders
- Sports Leaders
- Welcoming and News Leaders
- Expressive Arts Leaders
Catholic Secondary Schools Pathways
If you are considering Cabra College or Sacred Heart College for your child's secondary schooling from 2024 and beyond, please ensure you submit your Application for Enrolment as soon as possible.
Best Wishes
The Leadership Team - Todd LaForgia, Jo Livingstone, Amanda Razon & Michael Cimarosti
Pentecost
Last Sunday we celebrated the feast of Pentecost. It falls fifty days after Easter Sunday and marks the end of the Easter season, but it holds more significance that that. It is an important occasion in the Church calendar because it is the day that commemorates the birth of Christianity.
If we recall Maundy Thursday and Good Friday - most of Jesus followers fled or denied him as he was arrested and carried his cross. His disciples feared persecution by association to Jesus, but they continued to gather in secret after his death. Jesus promised his disciples that he would send the Holy Spirit which would fill them with courage and to be with them after he ascended into heaven.
So, Pentecost is the day when the Holy Spirit came down and filled the disciples with conviction and passion to go about the mission of Jesus in spreading the news of God’s love for all the world.
We can celebrate that we are testament to this mission, as a school that shares the good news of Jesus with others.
Mass & Liturgy
We are continuing to celebrate our class Mass and Liturgy with year level groups. Last week the Year 3 classes beautifully participated in a Liturgy at St. John the Baptist church. This was the first time we were able to have parents, grandparents and guardians join us in the celebration. Also, the Year 4 classes took part in the parish Mass on Wednesday which was lovely to come together as a broader community.
Vinnies Winter Appeal
We have begun our annual collection of goods to support those who are experiencing hardship or homelessness. This year we are choosing to focus on food donations as Vinnies has informed us that food is in high demand. Each class will be given a particular food item to donate:
- Reception: Cans of fruit
- Year 1: Cans of long-life food
- Year 2: Breakfast cereals
- Year 3: Long life milk
- Year 4: Rice
- Year 5: Pasta
- Year 6: Cooking oil
The Winter Appeal donations will happen from Monday 6th June to Friday 24th June.
