Dear Families
As you would be aware, on Friday 7th June staff had a Pupil Free Day. A portion of the day was dedicated to exploring and mapping the new and updated Mathematics curriculum. More specifically, staff broke the curriculum down into content areas and mapped the content across the year - identifying where and when the content will be taught.
The purpose of this activity was for staff to reconnect with the new curriculum, identify links between areas of Mathematics and to plan ways of ensuring all content is being taught across the year (at least once).
This was the first step in the staff learning process. Our next step later this year is to look at our assessment design, to ensure we provide our students the opportunity to demonstrate their understanding as well as opportunities to excel.
Mathematical Challenge
Easter Egg Challenge Results
In last term’s newsletter, I gave an Easter themed investigation for families to try at home. The task was to transform an image of an Easter Egg (image left) into a bird.
Congratulations to Louis T from 1M who provided a great solution to the problem.
Well done Louis!
Which One Doesn’t Belong?
This series of activities provides a prompt for discussion. The question – Which one doesn’t belong? Is posed and you are asked to identify which number is the odd one out and justify your choice.
There are many different answers to this question…. The key is the justification.
Have a go and see how many different answers you can come up with.
Email answers to … mpratt@stjohnpl.catholic.edu.au
Enjoy!

SEQTA Reports
Following the successful trial of reports being released through SEQTA Engage in 2023, Semester 1 reports will also be released via SEQTA Engage in week 10. Please ensure your correct email address is provided to the school and updated if you have changed it so these will be accessible. No paper copies will be printed. If you need to update or change your email address please contact the front office. Parents that are not currently set up with SEQTA Engage will receive an invitation to reset their password next week.
School Discos - Thank you
Thank you to the Parents and Friends who worked closely with our Deputy Principal, Jo Livingstone, to coordinate and organise the two discos for the children last Friday evening. The children (and some staff) were very excited and enjoyed the opportunity to show off their dancing skills. We wish to also acknowledge the staff present and the many parent volunteers. A great community event!
School Performance Report
Each year schools are required to prepare a report for their parents and community, as a requirement of the School Assistance Act. We wish to advise that the Annual School Performance Report is now available on the school website. Hard copies are also available from the office on request.
Volunteer Training Update
As previously communicated and most recently in an email to all families on the 12 June, if you are a current volunteer at St John the Baptist Catholic School you will need to undertake the new updated Responding to Risk, Harm, Abuse & Neglect in Education and Care (RRHAN-EC) training.
This new course will need to be completed before 31st December 2024 if you would like to keep volunteering without interruption.
To access the online update please use this [http://department%20for%20education%20plink%20-%20login./]link or cut and paste this link: https://www.plink.sa.edu.au/ilp/pages/login.jsf to login as ‘Non Department for Education staff login’ OR if you don’t already have a plink login, register [http://department%20for%20education%20plink/]here.
Which course is right for you?
My certificate expires on 31 December 2024 – do the online update only (takes about 2 hours).
My certificate is expired – start with the fundamentals. If you also work directly with children and young people, do the masterclass after you’ve finished the fundamentals course.
Once you have completed your update, please send a copy of your certificate to Julia Roy on jroy@stjohnpl.catholic.edu.au
Best Wishes

Sacramental Program
A big thank you to families who attended the preparation session last Thursday and those who completed the feedback form.
We look forward to our last session next term before the celebration of Confirmation and Holy Communion. Please keep our candidates in your prayers as they continue their preparation for this special day.
St John the Baptist Feast Day
We will celebrate our Patron Saint’s feast day next Monday 24 June, Week 9. We look forward to a whole school celebration of the Nativity of St John the Baptist. He, along with Mary the mother of Jesus, are the only two saints whose birthday we celebrate within the Church calendar.
Our day will begin with Mass at St John the Baptist Church, followed by a sausage sizzle lunch and buddy activities.
Amanda Razon
APRIM
We are now at the beginning of winter and helping others at this time of the year, especially those in need has always been one of our community’s strengths.
The ever-increasing cost of food and day to day living expenses means that many low-income families are facing great financial hardship. We will be donating long life foods and winter goods to Vinnies, to support individuals and families. It also provides the opportunity for our community to action our Christian social responsibility.
As part of our Winter Appeal, we will hold a Beanies for Vinnies Day. Students are invited to wear a beanie to support this initiative and bring in their item to donate to Vinnies.
Students are asked to donate the following item, according to their year level:
- Reception: Cans of fruit
- Year 1: Cans of long-life food
- Year 2: Breakfast cereals
- Year 3: Long life milk/ Warm drinks (hot chocolate, tea, coffee, Milo, etc)
- Year 4: Gloves
- Year 5: Scarves
- Year 6: Beanies
Beanies for Vinnies Day will take place on Tuesday 25th June, Week 9.
Please send your item to your child’s class teacher on this day.
Your donations are greatly needed and would be much appreciated.
Plympton Parish and School Community Lunch

Dear St John's Community
I hope all is well and this Sport piece finds you in good health and good spirits.
Last Thursday the 13th June St John the Baptist School were involved in the inaugural SACPSSA Basketball Carnival which was played at Wayville. What a fantastic opportunity for our Year 6’s to be involved in the very first carnival. The carnival was a huge success amongst the schools and something that will certainly grow size wise in the future. We were only able to nominate one girls team and one boys team. There were some very close games that could have gone either way. Overall, the students fought hard and showed excellent school spirit. The final round was a play-off round which was decided from a premiership table. The girls worked extremely well as a team and came away with a 6th place position from 14 teams. The boys fought hard, learnt along the way and came away with an 11th place finish from 14 teams. A huge thank you to Kym MacDonald who volunteered as Coach of the girls team as well as ran two in school training sessions and an after school training for our students. On the day we also had Simon Croxton and Matt Wilson who did an amazing job scoring and recording fouls for the teams.
Our school has been very privileged to have Lachlan De Sira from Golf Australia deliver some premium Golf sessions for our students on a Wednesday. I have enjoyed working with Lachlan and have thoroughly enjoyed delivering new learning experiences for the other students who have Sport on either Monday or Tuesday. The most pleasing aspect of running different sports for the students is when they give feedback about enjoying themselves at a local driving range with their parents on the weekends.
For our Reception – Year 2 students we have some exciting opportunities that are coming up just for you. The first one being an AFL Auskick experience which will commence with 2 x interest awareness sessions on both Monday July 1st and Tuesday July 2nd during school hours. From these sessions, flyers will be sent out with the students and if interested your child will have the opportunity to sign up for a 6-week program during Term 3 on Monday nights for just $50. All the required information will be on the flyers that will be given out during those initial sessions to all students.
The focus for our Year 4-6 students now moves away from Golf and towards Netball as we concentrate and prepare for the upcoming Netball Carnival. All students in Years 4-6 will be attending the SACPSSA Netball Carnival on Tuesday July 2nd (Term 2 – Week 10). Thank you to those parents who have already filled in the permission form and who have paid via the QKR! app. I look forward to seeing the remainder of permissions as they come in. Please email your classroom teacher and sport@stjohnpl.catholic.edu.au if your child wont be attending this carnival.
For all families that are signed up to our ‘After School Soccer Program’ we thank you for being so understanding regarding the oval situation. We appreciate your support as we have had to change our home ground venue for the remainder of the season. Our new space for home games is now Manson Oval, which is situated on Sargent Parade, Bellevue Heights.
Looking ahead on the SACPSSA calendar, I can see that next term our next opportunity to perform as a school will be at the Cross Country Carnival. Now that we have some additional oval space here at the school, I will be looking at starting up a ‘Run Club’ for those students in Year’s 4-6 that are interested in representing the school at this carnival. More information regarding this exciting opportunity will be sent via SEQTA email in the very near future.
Finally, just another reminder about the ‘Premiers Be Active Challenge’, this challenge should now be complete. If you are still to sent back your child’s completed booklet, can you please make this a priority as I will start to input this data. Once we have completed all of the data the children will be eligible to receive a medal for their hard work.
Yours in Sport,
Sam Putland

St John the Baptist School provides a safe environment for all while valuing the partnership between school and home.
As a Catholic community, we welcome and value volunteers. To be able to volunteer, and/or attend at other times throughout the school year, we ask that you hold a current Catholic Police Check (parents/caregivers attending excursions, reading in class, helping in class, attending community events), a current Responding to Risks of Harm, Abuse and Neglect in Education and Care for Volunteers certificate and have completed the volunteers application package.
A Catholic Police Check for volunteers is free for our current parents and caregivers. Application Forms are available in our school office.
This process ensures we maintain a child safe environment. To avoid disappointment, we encourage you to apply for a Catholic Police Check through the school office as soon as possible.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us at the school office on 8218 3300 or email Julia Roy on jroy@stjohnpl.catholic.edu.au .
If you are due to renew your Working With Children Check and your Catholic Police Clearance this year, please note that there is a high volume of renewals due. To avoid disappointment it is advisable to do your renewal earlier as there is currently a delay in processing them.
Thank you for your anticipated support.
