Dear Families
Property Aquisition - Anzac Highway
You may be aware that the property at 330 Anzac Highway was recently placed on the market. I am pleased to inform you that the school, working alongside personnel from the Catholic Education Office has successfully completed the purchase of the property. This acquisition presents an exciting opportunity for the school community and will benefit both current and future students. We look forward to reviewing the Masterplan and exploring the possibilities the land presents.
St John the Baptist Catholic School Colour Fun Run
We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to all the families for their understanding and patience regarding the postponement of the Colour Fun Run due to the variable weather. We understand that this event is highly anticipated by our students and families alike, and we appreciate your flexibility.
We are excited to announce that the Colour Fun Run has been rescheduled to Friday, 29th November. We look forward to celebrating this vibrant and fun-filled event with you all on the new date.
Further information and details will be provided to the community during Term 4.
The Qkr! App will remain open for donations during this time. For those families that have already donated, thank you! The children will still be entered into the appropriate draw for a chance to win a Rebel Sport voucher. Winners will be drawn and announced at an assembly towards the end of Term 4.
Swimming
As you are aware, students in Reception to Year 2 have been involved in swimming lessons at Immanuel College this week. This is an annual extra-curricular activity for our younger students, helping them build a strong foundation in water safety and swimming skills.
For our older students (Years 3-6) we have put in place two new programs which build upon these foundational water safety and swimming skills.:
- Surf Safety Day for Years 3 and 4: This programme will teach essential surf safety skills, including understanding surf conditions, recognising rip currents, and learning how to stay safe at the beach.
- Aquatics Day for Years 5 and 6: This programme will include a variety of water-based activities such as kayaking, snorkelling, and paddleboarding. The aim is to provide older students with a broader range of aquatic experiences, fostering a love for water sports and encouraging physical activity.
This structured and sequential approach to our extracurricular swimming program provides the following benefits:
- Skill Development: Each stage builds upon the previous one, ensuring a gradual increase in skill level and water confidence.
- Safety Awareness: Emphasises the importance of safety in and around water in various settings.
- Confidence Building: Engaging in diverse water activities helps students feel more comfortable and capable.
- Community Engagement: Fosters camaraderie among students, building lasting friendships as they learn and grow together.
We believe these changes will greatly benefit our students by providing age-appropriate and engaging activities that promote water safety, physical fitness, and a love for aquatic environments.
Catholic Schools Music Festival
The Senior Choir students (Years 5 and 6) will perform at the Catholic Schools Music Festival this evening. This annual event is always a fantastic showcase of the musical abilities of students in Catholic schools. The St John the Baptist Senior Choir students will be joined on stage by hundreds of children from Catholic schools around South Australia who perform a program of songs they have been rehearsing over the past three terms. Well done to the following students and their Choir Trainer, Loretta De Palma.

Open Morning & Mass
We had our last year level Open Morning and Liturgy last week. It was lovely to have so many families join us over the past term. It is a reminder of the wonderful community that we have here at St John the Baptist.
Bake Sale for Catholic Charities
On Tuesday, we held our bake sale during recess. The students brought their gold coins to donate to Catholic Charities and were able to select some delicious treats organised by a group of Year 4 students. All proceeds will go to Catholic Charities. A big thank you to Maisy, Charlotte, Abby S, Abby W, Eva, Pia, Macy and Aanya for their hard work in preparation for this event.
Thank you to everyone for supporting this initiative, your generosity is greatly appreciated.
Pen & Marker Recycling
Thank you for the continued support in recycling pens and markers. Our Justice and Mission leaders have collected and counted 562 for recycling. We look forward to seeing how many more we continue to collect in the next term.

Dear St John’s Community,
Congratulations to both students and parents for successfully making it to the end of Term 3. There have been so many outstanding sporting achievements that have occurred over the duration of Term 3. We at SJBCS certainly have some very sporty students who do a wonderful job at representing our school in the best possible manner.
Recently we have had some individuals recognised for their amazing achievements. This week we wish to congratulate Judd Balkwill (3J) on receiving the ‘Most Improved’ award at his soccer presentation for Adelaide University Soccer Club. This is Judd’s first season at the club, he has done an amazing job to work on his skills throughout the entire season.
We as a school wish to also congratulate Mason Powell (6RC) who competed in the SAPSASA Athletics District day. From this day, Mason was selected to represent SJBCS in the 4 x 100m Relay Team. At the SAPSASA State Carnival day, Mason’s team managed to secure a 3rd place finish. Congratulations on this enormous achievement at such a high level of competition.
We have had a number of girls try out for the SAPSASA Girls Football Team. I know there were over 30 girls trialling for only 16 positions. We wish to congratulate the following 3 girls for making the team: Danica Croxton (6RC), Mikayla Croxton (6P) and Eloise Sadler (6P). We wish these girls luck in their carnival that will run from Monday 21st – Wednesday 23rd October 2024 at Barratt Reserve.
On Wednesday 18th September SJBCS took 31 keen cricketers to the 2024 SACPSSA Cricket Carnival at Barratt Reserve. The students enjoyed 4 games each on luscious grass and in beautiful weather. I was very impressed with the energy levels of the teams and their willingness to co-operate during games. Both the ‘Year 6 Boys’ team and ‘Year 5/6 Girls’ team went through undefeated. Our ‘Year 5 Boys’ team had some very close games and came away with 2 wins/2 losses. Overall, every child demonstrated great sportsmanship on the day and thoroughly enjoyed themselves.
Next term in the area of After School Sport, our school will be offering both Basketball and T-Ball. We look forward to the students getting involved in these sports to develop their skills in these areas. Unfortunately, we did not receive enough registrations to submit teams in the areas of Volleyball and Netball.
Permission notes for Sports Day went home this week. Please make it a priority to have these returned ASAP with the final due date for these being Monday 14th October (First Day of Term 4). Please have your child return these to their classroom teacher. A volunteers form has been sent to all parents via SEQTA Email and we thank you for your anticipated support with this.
Yours in sport
Sam Putland
SPORTS COORDINATOR
St John the Baptist Catholic School Annual Sports Day will be held at the SA Athletics Stadium, Marjorie Jackson Nelson Drive, Mile End South on Friday 18th October.
The children are to be dropped off at the SA Athletics Stadium (Marjorie Jackson Nelson Dr, Mile End South) in the morning at 8:40am. Official Sports Day events will commence at 9:10am.
There will be no Before School Care on this day and all staff will be at the stadium. After School Care will be available. Students booked in to after School Care will travel back to school by bus.
Families can do a lot to help their children eat well!
For babies and toddlers, healthy food means a tasty variety from five special groups: vegies, fruits, grains, dairy, and proteins. Each group has its own superpowers to help them grow.
- Lead by Example: babies and toddlers learn by watching you, so show them how yummy and fun it is to eat healthy foods by eating them yourself.
- Involve Them: Take your child grocery shopping and let them pick out fruits and vegies. They'll be more excited to eat them if they've chosen them themselves.
- Make it Fun: Turn mealtime into an adventure! Use colourful plates, fun shapes, and involve them in cooking to make it exciting.
- Offer Variety: Introduce a wide range of foods from all the food groups. Let them explore different tastes and textures.
- Set a Routine: Regular meal and snack times help kids know when to expect food, reducing the chances of them getting too hungry and cranky.
- Eat Together: Family meals are a great time to bond and encourage healthy eating habits. Sit down together and enjoy your meals as a family. It's also a good time to talk / yarn about the day and tell funny stories.
Term 3 instalments for School fees are now due for those families who are paying in termly installments. Please make your payments before the end of term. If you have not received your statement in the mail, please email me and I can resend it.
As we are heading into the final term it is expected that all school fees are paid in the current year, so please check your statement and ensure your payments will cover the balance this year. If you are unable to complete your 2024 fees and require additional time, please contact me to discuss your situation. You can email me on accounts@stjohnpl.catholic.edu.au, phone me on 8218 3304 or come in and see me Monday to Friday 8.00am to 4.00pm.

Account Number: 100000331

On the 16th of September, the Year 6s went on an excursion to Parliament House, the State Library, and the Centre of Democracy.
In Parliament House the highlights were:
Meeting Jayne Stinson and getting a bag from her with rulers and other stationery. Having a debate in the House of Assembly on whether they should ban TikTok for children under 15. It was super fun. The majority of the people voted against it.
In the State Library we went into the Mortlock Library. It looked like a library from Harry Potter. We were allowed to take old books off the shelf to look at. The library even told us to feel and smell the old books.
In the Centre of Democracy there were 2 giant televisions that covered the wall with buttons that you could press with famous people’s faces on them. If you pressed them, it would bring up a short 1-page biography. There were also advertisments as buttons and old news papers and relics.
We saw the WW1 and WW2 Memorial with all the names of the people who died, and the year served. It had a large statue with a lion with a crown representing the royal family and an angel holding a dead body that symbolized all those who died in the war.
Feeding the pigeons was also fun. The teachers did not like us doing it, but we still did it.

St John the Baptist School provides a safe environment for all while valuing the partnership between school and home.
As a Catholic community, we welcome and value volunteers. To be able to volunteer, and/or attend at other times throughout the school year, we ask that you hold a current Catholic Police Check (parents/caregivers attending excursions, reading in class, helping in class, attending community events), a current Responding to Risks of Harm, Abuse and Neglect in Education and Care for Volunteers certificate and have completed the volunteers application package.
A Catholic Police Check for volunteers is free for our current parents and caregivers. Application Forms are available in our school office.
This process ensures we maintain a child safe environment. To avoid disappointment, we encourage you to apply for a Catholic Police Check through the school office as soon as possible.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us at the school office on 8218 3300 or email Julia Roy on jroy@stjohnpl.catholic.edu.au .
If you are due to renew your Working With Children Check and your Catholic Police Clearance this year, please note that there is a high volume of renewals due. To avoid disappointment it is advisable to do your renewal earlier as there is currently a delay in processing them.
Thank you for your anticipated support.
Insights may be discussed at future School Advisory Board meetings or you may be contacted personally for further follow up!
