Dear Families
Welcome to Term 3
On Tuesday 23rd July we welcomed 22 new students to the school as part of the mid year Reception intake. We are thrilled to have the children join us and become a part of our school community. We look forward to their exciting journey of discovery and development.
We also welcomed Sheyana (RK), Maya (RBR), Raphael (3BM) and Shonnel (5G) into the school. It is great to have you all here!
Unlocking a Bright Future: The Power of the First 1000 Days
The Australian Primary Principal’s Association (APPA) is committed to supporting families in ensuring every child has the best start in life. They have partnered with leading paediatrician Prof Frank Oberklaid of The Murdoch Children’s Research Institute to produce the Thrive with Five paper.
In the first 1000 days of a child's life, their brain grows really fast. Every time they see, hear, or touch something, it helps their brain make new connections. Eating healthy food and getting good sleep are very important because they help the child grow strong. When parents show love and care, it helps the child feel safe and learn to trust others. Playing and exploring help children learn to talk and become curious, which makes learning easier as they get older.
Families benefit from a supportive community, ensuring both they and the child thrive. Our school is part of a supportive community, and we want to partner with families to shape a lifetime of benefits for every child.
In each newsletter this term, we will share information about the important five: play, talk, read, eat well and sleep.
Live Learn Lead Survey
Once again this year, the school will conduct the Living Leading Learning Surveys to examine the understanding of the vision and extent to which CESA’s Living Learning Leading Framework is taking place in schools: staff, student and family perceptions.
The surveys will be based around 4 components -
-
Catholic Identity
-
Curriculum
-
Student agency, identity, learning and leadership
-
Community engagement
Data from the surveys will assist the school to develop plans for improvement.
The survey suite consists of:
-
Student Survey - Years 2 - 6
-
Parent and Caregivers Survey
-
Staff survey
You can access the Parent and Caregiver survey at the following link:

Feast of St Mary of the Cross MacKillop
On Thursday 8th August we will celebrate as a whole school community, the Feast of St Mary of the Cross Mackillop. A whole school liturgy will be held in the Hall at 9:10am and all are welcome to attend.
At this special occasion we acknowledge Mary’s impact through the Sisters of St Joseph, the religious order founded by Mary and who were instrumental in establishing our school as it stands today.
Best wishes,
Leadership Team
Sacramental Program
Candidates involved in this year’s Sacramental program will celebrate their Holy Communion and Confirmation on Sunday 18th August at the 10am Mass.
Their final session: Pizza and Poster making will be held in the hall at 6pm, followed by rehearsal in the church, on Wednesday 7th August.
Recycling Markers & Pens
As you may be aware, we are continually improving our practice of being a more ecologically sustainable school. This term, our Year 6 Justice and Mission Leaders will be recycling any old/empty pens and markers. They will be visiting classrooms each week for collection. These will be recycled through Officeworks. If you have any markers and pens that have run out of ink, please feel free to send them to school with your child to also be recycled.
We look forward to taking more conscious steps towards sustainability!
Mass
Each year level will join the parish Mass at 9.30am on Wednesday mornings across the term. Parents are welcome to attend and join the small morning tea at the conclusion of Mass.
Mary MacKillop Feast Day
As a Josephite school, we will celebrate Mary MacKillop’s Feast Day on the 8th August with a liturgy and classroom activities.
Feast of the Assumption
The Feast of Mary’s Assumption is a holy day of obligation, where Catholics are called to set apart time to attend Mass. Our school will be joining the parish for the 9.30am Mass. Families are most welcome to attend.

Dear St John's Community
Welcome back to Term 3, how wonderful has the weather been for us all this week.
Here at SJBCS this week we successfully ran trials for the upcoming SACPSSA Cross Country Carnival. It was very pleasing to see many students put their Run Club training to good use, producing some very pleasing times. From these trials I was able to group students into their appropriate divisions. It was very pleasing to see many students run times that placed them directly into Division A. We look forward to taking 77 eager runners next Wednesday to East Parklands to represent our school.
For our R-4 Parents and those that signed their children up for Auskick, we will be starting these sessions this coming Monday August 5th here at school from 3:30pm – 4:15pm. We are aware that there are some families that would like their child/ren to be involved with Auskick, but have their child/ren booked into OSHC. I am more than happy for these students to be involved in the Auskick. For this to occur you must first register your child/ren with Auskick, then email me regarding them being in OSHC. I will then confirm this with you via email and will happily sign them out of OSHC, be present during the Auskick Session and then will sign them back into OSHC at the conclusion of the session. We look forward to these sessions beginning.
Please be reminded that now is good time to be returning those Premier’s Be Active Challenge Booklets. If you still have yours hidden somewhere at home, please find it and have them returned to your child’s class teacher. If any students are new to the school, you have 4 weeks to complete the challenge.
This week we congratulate Ethan Beresford for competing in the 2024 Pool Lifesaving State Titles. As you can see from the photo Ethan had a very successful meet. He was able to secure State Title wins in the Rope Throw, as well as the Tube Tow category. State Titles are sometimes very hard to come by. We at SJBCS congratulate Ethan for winning two during the same weekend. Please remember if your child is achieving outstanding results in community sport, please email me this information so that we can celebrate together.
Enjoy this magnificent weather.
Yours in Sport,
Sam Putland
SPORT COORDINATOR
Hello from Lindi Jane
What an honour to share my talents and love with St John the Baptist Catholic School.
My Vocal Coaching days have developed from being a coach in puppetry and Ventriloquism.
I have the pleasure to sing and play percussion in Children’s shows & Family shows weekly!
After 30 years of performing around the world, I am now based in Adelaide.
Over the years many people ask if could share my skills and talents with them and have been privately teaching in performance schools, aged care facilities & talent schools for the past 12 years.
‘Giving is Living’ this is my motto in life and incorporating performance coaching into my Vocal Coaching has been wonderful!
I love helping Children into confident singers on stage and recording.
Thank you Big Smiles, LJ

St John the Baptist School provides a safe environment for all while valuing the partnership between school and home.
As a Catholic community, we welcome and value volunteers. To be able to volunteer, and/or attend at other times throughout the school year, we ask that you hold a current Catholic Police Check (parents/caregivers attending excursions, reading in class, helping in class, attending community events), a current Responding to Risks of Harm, Abuse and Neglect in Education and Care for Volunteers certificate and have completed the volunteers application package.
A Catholic Police Check for volunteers is free for our current parents and caregivers. Application Forms are available in our school office.
This process ensures we maintain a child safe environment. To avoid disappointment, we encourage you to apply for a Catholic Police Check through the school office as soon as possible.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us at the school office on 8218 3300 or email Julia Roy on jroy@stjohnpl.catholic.edu.au .
If you are due to renew your Working With Children Check and your Catholic Police Clearance this year, please note that there is a high volume of renewals due. To avoid disappointment it is advisable to do your renewal earlier as there is currently a delay in processing them.
Thank you for your anticipated support.
The updated RRHAN-EC courses were released on plink on Monday 29 April 2024 and, for most of us, completion of the online update will need to be done before 31 December 2024 when our current certificate expires. You need to complete the new RRHAN-EC online update unless you already have a current certificate with an expiry date of 31 December 2027.
To access the online update please use this link to login as ‘Non Department for Education staff login’ OR if you don’t already have a plink login, register here.
If your RRHAN-EC has already expired or you are new to education, please refer to the following guide which will help you to determine which course you need to do.
Which course is right for you?
My certificate expires on 31 December 2024 – do the online update only (takes about 2 hours).
My certificate is expired – start with the fundamentals. If you also work directly with children and young people, do the masterclass after you’ve finished the fundamentals course.
Insights may be discussed at future School Advisory Board meetings or you may be contacted personally for further follow up!
Please find link here for your suggestions.
