Dear Families
At St John the Baptist Catholic School, our commitment to fostering a positive, safe and nurturing environment for all students continues to move forward with great momentum with the continued professional learning with the Positive Behaviour Interventions and Supports Framework (PBIS). Over the past few months, our staff have continued to work on developing a comprehensive whole-school behaviour matrix, along with detailed procedures and lesson plans focused on lunchtime eating expectations.
This PBIS behaviour matrix is a cornerstone of our efforts to create a consistent and supportive framework that guides student behaviour across all areas of school life. It outlines clear expectations for students and staff, helping them understand and embody the values we uphold as a school community. The values of Inclusivity, Justice and Compassion have been chosen to reflect the schools Vision and Mission statement as well as combining our Mary Mackillop values.
We are pleased to report that the draft version of the behaviour matrix was shared with our School Advisory Board. After valuable feedback and further staff meetings, the matrix has been refined accordingly. This refinement marks a significant milestone as we prepare for the next phase of this important project.
Our next steps involve engaging with our most important stakeholders—the students. In the coming weeks, we will be conducting a consultation process with our student body to gather their insights and perspectives on the behaviour matrix. This collaborative approach ensures that the matrix reflects the needs and experiences of our students, fostering a sense of ownership and responsibility.
In addition to the behaviour matrix, our staff have also been developing specific lesson plans to guide students expected behaviours during eating time. These lessons are designed to promote positive social interactions, reinforce good manners, and ensure that lunchtime is a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone.
As we continue this work, a draft version of the Behaviour Matrix is attached for families to view below. We remain focused on our goal of fully implementing the behaviour matrix and other behaviour procedures for the 2025 school year. We are excited about the progress made so far and look forward to the valuable contributions from our students as we move forward together. Staff professional development to fully implement PBIS will continue throughout this year and as we learn more, we will continue to share our progress. Stay tuned for more updates as we approach the final stages of this initiative.

Dear St John's Community
What an outstanding week we have had weather wise. There is a hint of Spring in the air and different sporting codes are reaching finals. Through talking with the students, I know there are a number of teams in the finals. I wish all teams competing in finals the best of luck and encourage them to be the best version of themselves and to keep sportsmanship levels high.
Last Wednesday 7th of August SJBCS took 73 students to the SACPSSA Cross Country Carnival. We had students running right across the 3 divisions: Division A, Division B and Division C. All of our runners put in their best efforts and I was very proud of each of the students. We had some fantastic team results with the Year 3 Girls and Year 4 Boys Division B teams winning a pennant each for the best overall aggregate. Individually, I would like to mention very impressive runs from two of our competitors. Olivia Sadler (3J) competed in Division A and placed 3rd in her age/division group. Leo Ritan (4W) competed in Division C and placed 2nd in his age/division group. Both of these runners were up against approximately 120 runners in their races.
Our Reception – Year 2 students are all actively involved in the Monday night Auskick sessions from 3:15pm – 4:00pm. It is really pleasing to see these students learning new skills and giving it their best efforts. I really do enjoy this 45 mins during the week helping and assisting these energetic and enthusiastic students. Thank you to all the parents who come along and encourage their children with these opportunities.
Students have now started to engage in Sport lessons that help and prepare them for the upcoming Sports Day. Although Sports Day isn’t until Term 4 - Week 1, Friday 18th October, I’m very confident that this event will sneak up very quickly. Our students have been very engaged so far in these lessons, so I look forward to working with each and every one of them over the coming weeks.
We have introduced a new ‘Spirit Token Award System’ here at school that will assist us in awarding the Spirit Cup on Sports Day. All staff have been equipped with tokens and award students when they demonstrate our school values and for positive behaviours displayed by the students. Each action when witnessed by a staff member will be rewarded with a token. Tokens are gathered in individual classrooms and then our Year 6 students will collect these and add them all to the team jars. So that we can visually keep track of this system, the team jars will be located in the window of the REC K classroom. These can be easily seen outside Ms. Koster’s classroom by all when in ‘The Green’ area. I look forward to these jars filling up over the next 7 weeks.
I hope you all take some time to enjoy this sunshine we are currently experiencing, go well everyone.
Yours in Sport,
Sam Putland

Play is good for babies and adults!
Play can happen anywhere and can be fun for baby and carers. A good, shared laugh is a mood booster!
Play Peekaboo: While sitting with baby, hide your face behind your hands or a blanket and then reveal it saying ‘Peekaboo’. This helps baby understand that objects continue to exist even when they cannot be seen, heard, or touched.
Dance: Hold a dance party to a favourite song and dance with your little one. It improves motor skills and is a good way to be active together.
Play Hide and Seek with Toys: Hide a toy under a blanket and encourage your baby to find it. This teaches problem-solving skills.
Stacking blocks: Simple stacking toys or blocks, help develop motor skills and hand-eye coordination.
Bubble Chase: Blow bubbles and let your baby try to catch or pop them. The movement and colours will captivate them.
Outdoor Exploring: Let your baby feel the grass, leaves, and flowers. You can also collect safe items like smooth stones or pinecones for them to explore.
Tummy Time on a Blanket: Lay a blanket on the grass and let your baby enjoy tummy time while looking at the sky, leaves, or toys. Talk out loud about what you see and hear.

Book Week
Each year, across Australia, the Children’s Book Council of Australia CBCA, brings children and books together celebrating Children’s Book Week ®. Throughout the year, the CBCA works in partnership with authors, illustrators, publishers, booksellers and other organisations in the children’s book world to bring words, images and stories into the hearts and minds of children and adults. The theme for this year is ‘Reading is Magic’.
On Monday 19th August there will be a Book Week Parade at 9.00am. Parents are welcome to attend. Students are encouraged to come to school dressed as their favourite book character (with the book or photocopy of the cover) or in the theme of Reading is Magic. Please keep the costumes simple and inexpensive. Home-made creations are very welcome.
All year groups are currently having fun by being involved in creating works of art to be displayed in our library using examples of the different kinds of magic. Our students take pride in seeing their work displayed for all of the school community to enjoy.
Throughout the whole of Book Week, classes will be focused on the shortlisted books, voted the best by Australian authors and illustrators this year. Classes will be involved in reading and in various activities and art and craft based on these books with their teachers.
We continue our celebrations for Rec. – Year 4 classes with a performance by Perform! Education titled ‘MAYBE A MIRACLE!’ This will take place Week 6, Wednesday 28th August at 9.00am in the school hall.
The performance focusses on some of the shortlisted Book Week books and is a fun way to complete our celebration of Australian books, authors and illustrators.
Many thanks in advance for your efforts in helping children with a costume to wear on Monday 19th August. Remember simple outfits are fine.
Happy reading

St John the Baptist School provides a safe environment for all while valuing the partnership between school and home.
As a Catholic community, we welcome and value volunteers. To be able to volunteer, and/or attend at other times throughout the school year, we ask that you hold a current Catholic Police Check (parents/caregivers attending excursions, reading in class, helping in class, attending community events), a current Responding to Risks of Harm, Abuse and Neglect in Education and Care for Volunteers certificate and have completed the volunteers application package.
A Catholic Police Check for volunteers is free for our current parents and caregivers. Application Forms are available in our school office.
This process ensures we maintain a child safe environment. To avoid disappointment, we encourage you to apply for a Catholic Police Check through the school office as soon as possible.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us at the school office on 8218 3300 or email Julia Roy on jroy@stjohnpl.catholic.edu.au .
If you are due to renew your Working With Children Check and your Catholic Police Clearance this year, please note that there is a high volume of renewals due. To avoid disappointment it is advisable to do your renewal earlier as there is currently a delay in processing them.
Thank you for your anticipated support.
