Dear Families
Maths and Mindset
Mind over matter. We hear this phrase quite often, however when it comes to learning Mathematics, an individual’s mindset really does matter. It is not uncommon for students and adults to make comments such as “I’m not good at Maths“I was never good at Maths” or “I hate Maths”.
Despite this, there is little evidence to suggest there is such thing as a ‘Maths Person’. Studies show that everyone is born with a capacity to learn Maths. Rather than being born with a ‘math brain’ scientists believe there is a direct relationship between an individual’s experiences and beliefs to their achievement and performance. Providing positive experiences to engage in Mathematics learning and fostering the belief that everyone can learn Maths, is key to unlocking a child’s potential.
Jo Boaler, a professor of Mathematics Learning at Stanford University and highly regarded figure in Mathematics education, provides some suggestions in supporting students learning in Mathematics. Some key points are:
1. Everyone can learn Maths to a high standard. Believing in yourself, it seemingly changes how your brain operates and what you learn. With a growth mindset, a belief they are capable of achieving good results, students are capable of learning Math concepts and gaining high achievement. As such, it is important for adults to provide positive feedback and encouragement to reinforce a positive mind set.
2. Mistakes and struggle is valuable in learning Maths. People feel uncomfortable making mistakes – it is human nature. This can lead to students unwilling to take risks, try new activities and sometimes giving up. However, it is important to recognise the time at which you are struggling, is the best time for learning. Celebrating mistakes is essential as it is through a struggle deep learning takes place.
3. Practice is important. The brain is like a muscle, the more we exercise and challenge it, the stronger it becomes. Evidence suggests that as little as a few minutes of practice per day helps ‘grow’ your brain. The more you practice, the deeper the learning becomes. It is true, some people may need to practice something more than the other. However, it is important to remember, everyone has the capacity to learn Maths.
4. Depth is better than speed. Being good at Maths does not mean being fast. While fluency can be helpful, thinking slowly enables students to ask questions and see connections between ideas and concepts. Through deep thinking, deep and lasting learning takes place.
If you are interested in reading further about some hints and activities on how you can work with your child at home, Jo Boaler’s website, You Cubed has a range of fun and engaging activities that can help you initiate Maths conversation and thinking at home. The children will then be entered into the appropriate draw for a chance to win a Rebel Sport voucher. Winners will be announced at the first assembly of Term 4.
Year 4 Camp
Next week our students in Year 4, along with their teachers will head to Mylor for their annual camp. The students will engage in a range of activities including raft making, team building skills and a low ropes course. It is sure to be a great experience.

Hats
With the UV Index now creeping up, it is time for the children to again consider wearing their hats during the play breaks. Officially this is compulsory from the beginning of Term 4, but the children are encouraged and welcome to wear their hats for the remaining two weeks of Term 3.

The Leadership Team
Enrolments for siblings to start in 2025 are now urgently overdue.

ReLAT Assessment
On Thursday, the Year 4 students participated in the ReLAT along with all other Year 4 students across South Australia in Catholic Schools. This is an online multiple-choice test with thirty-five questions which cover content from the Religious Curriculum, Crossways Redesigned. The school uses this tool to inform whole-of-school professional learning needs and the continuous improvement of teaching in Religious Education.
Staff Reflection Day
This week on Monday 11th September, the staff at St John’s had a Reflection Day in Belair. Staff engaged in an opportunity to further develop their knowledge on ecology and theology. We were thankful to have Julian Kluge, the Manager of the Catholic Identity Section at Catholic Education SA who presented the first session on ecology and Laudato Si, the encyclical written by Pope Francis. Overall, it was an enriching day for the staff to contemplate and appreciate the gift of our Common Home.
Scroll into Spring
As we feel the warmth of this lovely Spring season, we are encouraged to spring into action by supporting vulnerable and disadvantaged communities. As a Catholic community, we will be focusing our contributions on the Catholic Charities appeal.
For a fundraising initiative, Jo Fitzgerald will be making her delicious savoury scrolls. We will have a selection of pizza $2.50, cheese $2 or cheese & vegemite $2, available to order for recess only. This will be given to your child at their allocated recess timeslot on Thursday 28th September, Week 10.
You can purchase these scrolls on the QKR app. Orders close on Wednesday 20th September at 23:59. Please note there will be no late orders.
For each scroll purchased, 50c will be donated in support of Catholic Charities. Alternatively, if you would like to donate to Catholic Charities, you can do this through the QKR app also.
We thank you kindly for your generosity.

Best thing about St John the Baptist Catholic School |
The community of people that attend. It is a very inclusive school. Some of our closest friends have been formed from meeting the parents at St Johns. I’m also very proud of the forward thinking way the school operates – building, grounds, play space and leadership. |
Grief
Explaining grief to children in the aftermath of the loss of a loved one is really challenging. Not only are we dealing with our own feelings, we have to then try to help our children navigate the changes that are happening and what the future might look like.
Grief isn't just about losing a loved one though, grief can be related to the loss of a friendship, a home, parent separation, moving interstate or overseas, changing schools. Any situation that involves loss of some kind can cause grief. Grief is a normal part of life, during times of loss, and it needs to be acknowledged and supported.
A short story, written by Doris Stickney in the late 1970's uses Waterbugs and Dragonflies as a metaphor for explaining what happens after death in a child friendly way. Elements of this story can also be used to assist children in understanding the concept of loss and big changes in their life.

St John the Baptist School provides a safe environment for all while valuing the partnership between school and home.
As a Catholic community, we welcome and value volunteers. To be able to volunteer, and/or attend at other times throughout the school year, we ask that you hold a current Catholic Police Check (parents/caregivers attending excursions, reading in class, helping in class, attending community events), a current Responding to Risks of Harm, Abuse and Neglect in Education and Care for Volunteers certificate, have completed the volunteers application package and your COVID vaccination certificate.
A Catholic Police Check for volunteers is free for our current parents and caregivers. Application Forms are available in our school office.
This process ensures we maintain a child safe environment. To avoid disappointment, we encourage you to apply for a Catholic Police Check through the school office as soon as possible.

Tram Grade Separation Projects |
Marion Road and Cross Road Level Crossing |
The Australian and South Australian governments have jointly (50:50) funded $400 million to remove the two-level crossings where the Glenelg tram line crosses Marion and Cross Roads, Plympton. These works form part of the Tram Grade Separation Projects.
Removing these level crossings will ease congestion, improve safety, and create new public spaces under the tram overpass.
Intersection Upgrades As part of the project the intersections at Marion Road and Cross Road and Marion Road and Anzac Highway will be upgraded to further relieve congestion and improve safety.
The Marion Road and Anzac Highway intersection upgrade includes:
The Marion Road and Anzac Highway intersection upgrade concept can be viewed via the image gallery.
The Marion Road and Cross Road intersection upgrade includes:
The Marion Road and Cross Road intersection upgrade concept can be viewed via the image gallery.
Community engagement Community engagement is an important part of the planning, design and delivery stages of the project.
In April 2023 we released concept images for the new overpass and sought input from the community to help inform the key urban design elements.
Thank you to all members of the community who attended the sessions, provided feedback via phone and email or completed the online survey.
Further information on what we heard during the consultation is available via the latest project update.
Community engagement will continue to play an important role throughout the project particularly as we work through the urban design elements of the overpass.
Community Placemaking Reference Group As the project progresses into the detailed design phase, we will form a Community Placemaking Reference Group (CPRG). This will be an opportunity for community representatives to provide input directly to the project team specifically on urban design elements.
The CPRG is an important tool that will help facilitate information sharing with the local community and will assist us with better understanding local concerns and opportunities regarding the urban design.
To express your interest in joining the CPRG please visit the Project Website. Expressions of interest close 22 September 2023.
More Information To find out more about the project, and to register for future email updates, please contact the project team:
