Dear Families
In Australia, we are quickly moving toward being a ‘cashless’ society. Cash payments have dropped to approximately 13% of all transactions, significantly down from 27% in 2017. This shift might be driven by several factors, including the increased use of smartphones, the convenience of digital wallets, and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, which accelerated the adoption of contactless payments to reduce physical contact.
As more people pay for goods using cards (debit and/or credit) the concept of learning about money is becoming more abstract and invisible for students. Many of us would have learned about money through experience. We may have watched our parents hand over money in exchange for goods, count out money to pay for items and check the change we were given (mostly!). As this experience has become less frequent, these learning opportunities are also changing.
The shift in purchasing habits is reflected in the recently revised Australian Curriculum. The Curriculum reflects a greater emphasis on financial literacy and problem-solving using money, from as early as Year 1. However, the skills of recognising and counting money is still named in the General Capabilities and plays a very important role in developing a student’s understanding on the value of money. Although cash transactions are becoming less common, hands-on activities with physical money can still provide valuable learning experiences. These activities allow students to physically count, exchange, and understand the value of money.
Learning about money from an early age is crucial, especially in a rapidly evolving financial landscape. Ultimately, fostering a comprehensive understanding of money through both traditional and digital means ensures that students are well-prepared to make positive financial decisions in the future.
Maths Challenge
Firstly, I would like to congratulate Archie from Year 3 who provided a great response to my last challenge – Which one doesn’t belong? Thank you, Archie, for taking the time to share your work with me! I liked how you thought flexibly and came up with many different answers!
For this term’s challenge, I am keeping with the theme of money.
Question: I have $1.45 in my pocket. What coins do I have in my pocket?
As you can probably see, there are many different possible answers to this question. Everyone is welcome to submit as many answers as they can work out. The more answers, the greater chance of picking the right answer! Yes, there is one correct answer for this problem.
Good luck!

Staffing News
We are pleased to announce the successful candidates for the recently advertised permanent teaching positions at the school were Melissa Gatto and Ori Mavrinac. We are excited about the continuing contributions Melissa and Ori will make in shaping the learning of the students at St John the Baptist Catholic School and congratulate them on their success.
Playgroup Award
It is with much excitement that we announce that our Playgroup has been nominated for a Playgroup SA Excellence Award. Specifically, we have been nominated in the category of Excellence in Intergenerational Play and Practice. The awards highlight the achievements of individual playgroups, their coordinators and supportive communities. Award winners will be announced at the Playgroup Awards Ceremony on October 1.
Instrumental Morning
The annual Instrumental Morning will be held next Tuesday morning, 17th September. This is an opportunity for those students involved in the Instrumental program at the school to perform in front of an audience including their peers and family members.
We look forward to a wonderful morning of music.
Colour Run
The annual Colour Fun Run will be held on Friday 20th September. We anticipate a fun filled afternoon as a school community. Information regarding the arrangements for the day have been sent home previously. A reminder that once all donations have been collected, we ask that each family make one payment per child via the Qkr! App by Friday 27th September. The children will then be entered into the appropriate draw for a chance to win a Rebel Sport voucher. Winners will be announced at the first assembly of Term 4.
Swimming Week
In Week 10 of this term, all students from Reception to Year 2 will be involved in the annual swimming week at Immanuel College. Information regarding the week has been sent home and all forms are now due back to your child’s classroom teacher. We thank you for your support.
Catholic Schools Music Festival
The annual Catholic Schools Music Festival will be held in Week 10 of this term (23-26 September). Students from our school will once again perform as part of the broader choir and have been working diligently each week in preparation for the performance.
Recently Blessing Kyalo and Nimi Fijabi were asked to audition for a soloist role on the evening. I am pleased to write that Blessing was successful through the audition process and will sing ‘One Moment in Time’ over two nights at the festival. A fantastic achievement!
Hats
With the UV Index now creeping up, it is time for the children to again consider wearing their hats during the play breaks. Officially this is compulsory from the beginning of Term 4, but the children are encouraged and welcome to wear their hats for the remaining two weeks of Term 3.
Right to Disconnect
We understand that parent/caregiver engagement goes hand in hand with student wellbeing and success and productive communication with parents/caregivers is an essential feature of a positive school culture.
Digital technologies have greatly assisted in this regard and the use of parent/caregiver information apps, social media (for general school information), school website, SEQTA and the use of email communication directly with staff is now routine.
We appreciate that parent/caregiver expectations as to staff accessibility have evolved in the context of enhanced digital communication practices. While representing efficient modes of communication, the breadth of digital communication options can create ‘availability creep’ where school employees become more accessible in locations and at times of the day, weekends and during periods of leave when they should be able to disconnect from work.
Indeed, recent laws have taken effect which provide school employees a right to disconnect.
In the interests of respecting the rights of our staff and recognising the importance of facilitating and promoting healthy communication, we are introducing the following as standard protocol during term time:
- Noting our staff spend a significant amount of their workday focussing on teaching or other activities applicable to their roles, staff on their work days will endeavour to respond to parent/caregiver communications requesting a response within 48 hours, noting staff will discern whether an urgent matter requires a shorter response timeframe; and
- Parents/ caregivers are encouraged to contact the school front office in the first instance for general information.
We ask that parents and caregivers be mindful and supportive of the above.
Thank you for your understanding.
Blessings

Staff Reflection Day
On Friday 6 September, the Staff all participated in a Reflection Day at the Adelaide Sailing Club. Staff were able to participate in activities throughout the day about the importance of our school’s Vision and Mission. We were able to intentionally reflect on how we contribute to this in relation to the Catholic faith and Josephite tradition.
Bake Sale
A small group of Year 4 students will be running a bake sale during recess time on Tuesday of Week 10. There will be sweet treats such as cupcakes and cookies available. Please bring a gold coin donation- one item per gold coin. All proceeds will be donated to Catholic Charities.
ReLAT (Religious Literacy Assessment Tool)
The Year 4 students from St John the Baptist and Year 4s across South Australia in Catholic Education participated in the ReLAT this week. The test is similiar in format to NAPLAN with multiple choice questions completed online.
Pen & Marker Recycling
Our Year 6 Justice and Mission leaders continue the weekly collection of pens and markers for recycling. Families are welcome to bring in their old pens and markers for recycling.

Why Reading with Babies is Awesome!
Reading with babies isn't just fun – it’s super important for their growth! Here’s why:
- Boosts Language Skills: Reading books, talking about pictures, and sharing stories help babies learn speech sounds, words, and how to talk.
- Early Literacy: Doing these activities every day helps babies get used to books and words, setting them up to be great readers when they grow up.
- Fires Up Imagination: Stories make babies dream big and learn about the world around them.
- Bonding Time: Reading together is a special time for you and your baby to connect and enjoy each other’s company.
Fun Tips for Reading with Babies:
- Start Early: You can begin reading to your baby from birth!
- Quiet Time: Newborns love calm reading sessions. By 12 months, they'll be excited and involved in story time.
- Interactive Reading: Point out words and pictures and make your voice lively with different tones.
- Pick Fun Books: Babies love books with rhymes, rhythm, and repetition.
Remember, every time you read with your baby, you're helping them grow smarter and stronger! So, grab a book and start the adventure together!

Dear St John’s Community,
Term 3 - Week 8 is already upon us and so too is this amazing weather. There’s certainly a fresh Spring vibe in the air and this is something that I am sincerely grateful for.
Last Thursday the 5th September we took 21 Year 5 and Year 6 students to Hisense Stadium to compete in the Westies Cup Football Carnival. We were very fortunate to have great weather on the day, as well as volunteer coaches and mentors for both teams. Huge thank you to Dave Piasente, Luke Powell, Matt Wilson, Pietro Giannini and Matt Hamilton who were a sensational help on the day, ensuring it was a very smooth process for all of our students. We must congratulate the Year 6 Team who went through their 6 games undefeated and won the competition. Our Year 5 Team improved over the course of the day and worked better as a team showing great progress over the day. Every player showed great team values and spirit throughout the day.
We would like to congratulate all of our R-2 students who engaged in the 6 Week Auskick program here at St John the Baptist Catholic School. We had fantastic support from our parents and this showed through the impressive amount of participants on a weekly basis. The students certainly developed their skills over the 6 weeks to the point where they knew the rules and all participated in our full oval modified games. It was very pleasing to see many willing parents get involved in our finale student vs parent modified match. A fantastic way to end such a wonderful program. A huge thanks to Lachlan and Luke for their contribution and for making all of the sessions engaging for our students.
Still on the topic of Football we would like to congratulate Ashley Wilson (6P) who was recently awarded Best and Fairest Player for the U12 Plympton Bulldogs. Ashley’s team went through all of the minor rounds undefeated, played in the Grand Final but unfortunately had to settle for runners-up this season. Ashley shows great confidence, is quick to make smart decisions on-field and regularly hits targets when playing football.
Our next carnival will be the SACPSSA Cricket Carnival which will take place on Wednesday 18th September. We have 3 teams nominated for this and these students are looking forward to representing SJBCS on the day. We wish these cricketers well and hope that they enjoy themselves above all.
With Term 2 and 3 ‘After School Sports’ coming to a close, we wish to publicly thank all of our wonderful basketball and soccer coaches and team managers for their dedication and contributions over the past 2 terms. These sports simply just don’t happen without our amazing volunteers who give up a portion of their time on a weekly basis. As well as all of the students, we too appreciate all of your outstanding efforts. The students are very lucky to have such well run competitions thanks to those who volunteer.
We look forward to closing out Term 3 in a very positive manner. Go well everyone.
Yours in sport

St John the Baptist School provides a safe environment for all while valuing the partnership between school and home.
As a Catholic community, we welcome and value volunteers. To be able to volunteer, and/or attend at other times throughout the school year, we ask that you hold a current Catholic Police Check (parents/caregivers attending excursions, reading in class, helping in class, attending community events), a current Responding to Risks of Harm, Abuse and Neglect in Education and Care for Volunteers certificate and have completed the volunteers application package.
A Catholic Police Check for volunteers is free for our current parents and caregivers. Application Forms are available in our school office.
This process ensures we maintain a child safe environment. To avoid disappointment, we encourage you to apply for a Catholic Police Check through the school office as soon as possible.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us at the school office on 8218 3300 or email Julia Roy on jroy@stjohnpl.catholic.edu.au .
