Term 4, Week 2 2023
Contents
Dear Families
Welcome
Welcome to Term 4. The beginning of a term is always a time of reconnection and excitement as we look forward to what lies ahead. As we commence Term 4, we would like to welcome two new students to the school. We warmly welcome Vince M (4PR) and Quade M (6C). We know from observations over the past week, that both boys have been warmly embraced by their peers.
Staffing News
Paul O’Dea will bring to a close his service to the St John the Baptist Catholic School community at the end of the 2023 school year. Paul has been a teaching staff member at the school for the past 26 years! We thank Paul for his contribution to the life of the school over this significant amount of time and later this term we will ensure Paul receives a fitting farewell. The school will advertise for a Physical Education teacher to commence in January 2024.
In other staffing news, Pam Marks will step away from the Finance Officer position at the conclusion of this year. Pam will remain at the school however, taking up a part time role in sports administration, supporting the newly appointed Physical Education teacher. We look forward to Pam’s continued contribution to the life of the St John the Baptist Catholic School community. The school will also advertise for a Finance Officer to commence in January 2024.
St John the Baptist Catholic School Colour Fun Run
Thank you to the St John the Baptist Catholic School community for their great support of the Colour Fun Run held late last term.
Thank you to everyone for your fundraising efforts. Collectively we were able to raise $3606 (before expenses) towards a new school playground.
At our school assembly this week the draws for the Rebel Sport vouchers were conducted. We are pleased to announce that the following students walked away from the assembly with a big smile!
$50 Voucher- Archer G
$100 Voucher- Chloe S
$200 Voucher- Ruby H
Sports Day
We wish to thank the St John the Baptist Catholic School community for their great support of the annual Sports Day held last Friday. It was fantastic to look out over the grounds and see the community coming together. Such a day is certainly not possible without the team effort of all! We would particularly like to thank the parents who volunteered their time to assist on the day. We also wish to acknowledge the efforts of Paul O’Dea for his work in ensuring the program ran smoothly.
We congratulate Beovich (Green Team) on their victory and MacKillop (Red Team) for winning the Spirit Award. All teams were ably led by their House leaders.

Finally, a big thank you to all staff and students for their participation, which contributed to a wonderful day and a great sense of community.
Arch D Podcasting Awards
As you may be aware our Year 6 students have once again been involved in the Arch D Podcasting initiative. Each student was placed in a team and the children developed a podcast which is now uploaded to the ‘School Life’ podcast channel on Spotify, Apple Podcasts and iHeart Radio.
Every year, Arch D Radio and Podcasting celebrates outstanding achievement by Catholic school students at the Arch D Awards in November. With so many schools and students involved, we are pleased to announce that students from St John the Baptist Catholic School have been nominated in award categories for Primary schools. Congratulations and good luck to the following:
Podcaster of the Year (Primary)- Isabelle P E
This is an award for a student that demonstrated leadership within their podcasting community, elevating the quality of both their own and other’s podcast work to the highest standard.
Podcast Episode of the Year (Primary)- Isabelle P E, Tatum N, Arihia M, Ninel C
This award recognises the most engaging episode that consistently and effectively uses the techniques taught within the Arch D course in the creation of their podcast.
Student Voice (Primary)- Freya S
This award recognises students who have stepped out of their comfort zone and made a big positive impact on their group’s podcast.
Principal’s Podcasting Award- Ava K, Amarli R, Freya S, Belles S
This award recognises outstanding collaboration, effective communication and commitment to quality in the creation of the podcast.
Class Placements 2024
We are currently planning for the 2024 school year, which includes class placements. Should you have any academic or social considerations (not teacher preference, as often there will be changes to teaching structures and personnel)) which you think we need to take into consideration before placing your child into a class, please send an email to Kylie on kmcbride@stjohnpl.catholic.edu.au prior to Monday 30th October at 9am.
When an email is received, you will get a confirmation of receipt of email from Kylie. If you do not receive an email within 48 hours, please make contact again.
Over the coming weeks, the students will be given an opportunity to provide some names of students who they learn well with in the classroom. Students will be guaranteed one peer from their nomination list. This, along with the needs of all students will be considered when staff work together to form classes for the new year.
It is beneficial to provide information to the school at this planning stage prior to Monday 30th October and far easier to accommodate considerations than once the classes have been formed. The class placement process is new each year. Please do not assume the school is aware of previous or past considerations. If you would like the school to consider information this year, please send it through. We thank you for your continued support. Anzac Highway Properties - Update At this point in time, works on the development of the land on Anzac Highway are due to commence by mid November and run throughout Term 4 with the project estimated to be completed by late January. Due to the scope of the works, there will at some point in the project be a need to close off access to the Anzac Highway car park. We will keep you updated prior to this, so you are able to make alternative arrangements. Best Wishes The Leadership Team
Mass and Liturgy
This term the Year 4 classes had their Open Morning on Wednesday, then joined the parish for Mass at 9:30am. There was a shared morning tea available at the conclusion of Mass for parents and parishioners.
All Saints & All Souls Day
Each November, the Church observes two days in the calendar that recognise those individuals who lived a life of holiness and the souls of the faithful departed.
The parish will hold their 9:30am Masses and the school will observe both occasions with class liturgies led by their teachers.
Plympton Parish & School Community Lunch
The parish and school will be holding a lunch, celebrating the diversity of cultures within the community. All are invited to come along to Mass at 10:00am and bring a plate to share for lunch from 11.30am on Sunday 5th November. Please see advertisement in the Community Notices below.

St John the Baptist School provides a safe environment for all while valuing the partnership between school and home.
As a Catholic community, we welcome and value volunteers. To be able to volunteer, and/or attend at other times throughout the school year, we ask that you hold a current Catholic Police Check (parents/caregivers attending excursions, reading in class, helping in class, attending community events), a current Responding to Risks of Harm, Abuse and Neglect in Education and Care for Volunteers certificate, have completed the volunteers application package and your COVID vaccination certificate.
A Catholic Police Check for volunteers is free for our current parents and caregivers. Application Forms are available in our school office.
This process ensures we maintain a child safe environment. To avoid disappointment, we encourage you to apply for a Catholic Police Check through the school office as soon as possible.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us at the school office on 8218 3300 or email Francis Schulz on fschulz@stjohnpl.catholic.edu.au .
