Dear Families
As we move towards planning for the 2023 School Year the year level structure at St John the Baptist Catholic School will be as follows:
- Reception – 2 classes + mid year intake class
- Year 1 – 2 classes
- Year 2 – 2 classes
- Year 3 – 3 classes
- Year 4 – 2 classes
- Year 5 – 2 classes
- Year 6 – 2 classes
In the coming weeks staff will begin to prepare for the 2023 class placement of students. Students have been given an opportunity to indicate who they learn well with in support of this process. We believe all children are capable of, and should be given the opportunity to make new friendships, in new classrooms with a new teacher. Each experience helps develop resilience in children where they learn to challenge themselves and experience situations that prepare them for life beyond primary school.
We are committed to nurturing all aspects of every child to their full potential. A significant amount of thought and time is invested in this process to foster a positive learning environment and consider the wellbeing of all students. Consideration of student placement is made taking the following into account:
- Class size
- Academic ability / Learning needs
- Gender mix
- Peer groups
- Student requests
- Parent requests
- Sibling divisions
- Behavioural needs
- Special family circumstances
- Social or emotional needs
- Cohort dynamics
On Wednesday 7 December, students will be given an opportunity to meet their 2023 teacher and their new class mates. This transition process aims to supports students to feel confident and positive about the new year ahead over the summer holiday break.
Best Wishes
The Leadership Team

Backbacks 4 SA Kids
This year our school community have decided to support the charity, Backpacks 4 SA Kids. As you would have read in the note that was sent last week, we are raising awareness and dedicating our fundraising towards this initiative.
We will be holding a Coin Line on Wednesday, 23rd November in Week 6. Children will be asked to bring in a gold coin(s) to school. We are aiming to fundraise a total of $1,000 to build 10 backpacks. If you would like to donate more to this cause, you can also do so through the Qkr! app.
Sacramental Program 2023
As mentioned in the last newsletter, we are looking towards preparing for the Sacramental Program for 2023. If your child is 8 years old, or older you may consider their readiness to receive the Sacraments of Reconciliation, Confirmation and Holy Communion.
The Sacraments are beautiful celebrations and allow individuals to enter a deeper relationship with God and the community. If you are interested please contact myself or the Parish Office (8293 6600).
RCIA Invite
If you, or anyone you know is interested in joining our enquiry sessions to find out about becoming Catholic, we would be delighted to welcome you into the group conversations that we are currently having with one young candidate who has just begun the journey with current members of our RCIA team. We ask you to be aware of the people around you who may be interested as sometimes a potential candidate just needs to be invited.
Bapisted adult Catholics who have not received the other Sacraments of Initiation (Confirmation and First Holy Communion) are also welcome to join to program, and prepare themselves to receive these sacraments which are traditionally administered at Easter during the Vigil Mass, but can be received at other times.
After the enquiry sessions which we are currently running, the person can decide if they would like to commit the process further or not. There is absolutely no pressure or obligation to continue if the person fells that it is not the path for them. If you have any questions, please contact any of the Parish team members or call the Parish office (8293 6600) at any time.

Calm Down Techniques - It's normal for children to get upset and angry at times, just like adults do. However, it can become a problem if the anger and emotional meltdowns become a regular occurrence. Attached here is a poster and list with 101 Calm Down Techniques. Not all of the techniques will suit your child but you may get some ideas that you hadn't thought of, or your child might pick out some that they would like to try next time they have an overwhelming negative response to a situation. Children learn so much by watching modelled behaviour from parents and caregivers, so this list could be used by the whole family. Print a copy and pop it on the fridge, or somewhere accessible for your child so they can go to it and have a look at what they can do. It's one thing to be told to do something, but its even better if they can be prompted by a visual - words or pictures.

Counsellor

No borrowing will be available to students after that date so that we can complete end of year tasks.
Best wishes
The Library Team
If you are able to spare a few hours a week to lend our head gardener, Bob, a hand looking after our vegetable garden and you have, or are willing to undertake a volunteer screening, please contact Kylie on kmcbride@stjohnpl.catholic.edu.au.
St John the Baptist School provides a safe environment for all while valuing the partnership between school and home.
As a Catholic community, we welcome and value volunteers. To be able to volunteer, and/or attend at other times throughout the school year, we ask that you hold a current Catholic Police Check (parents/caregivers attending excursions, reading in class, helping in class, attending community events), a current Responding to Risks of Harm, Abuse and Neglect in Education and Care for Volunteers certificate, have completed the volunteers application package and your COVID vaccination certificate.
A Catholic Police Check for volunteers is free for our current parents and caregivers. Application Forms are available in our school office.
This process ensures we maintain a child safe environment. To avoid disappointment, we encourage you to apply for a Catholic Police Check through the school office as soon as possible.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us at the school office on 8218 3300.
