Dear Families
As we move towards planning for the beginning of the 2024 School Year the class structure at St John the Baptist Catholic School will be as follows:
-
Reception – 3 classes
-
Year 1 – 2 classes
-
Year 2 – 2 classes
-
Year 3 – 2 classes
-
Year 4 – 3 classes
-
Year 5 – 2 classes
-
Year 6 – 2 classes
In the coming weeks staff will begin to prepare for the 2024 class placement of students. Students have been given an opportunity to indicate who they learn well with in support of this process. We believe all children should be given the opportunity to make new friendships, in their new classroom whilst reconnecting with established friends. Each new experience helps develop resilience in children where they learn to challenge themselves and experience situations that prepare them for life beyond primary school.
We are committed to nurturing all aspects of every child to their full potential. A significant amount of thought and time is invested in this process to foster a positive learning environment and consider the wellbeing of all students. Consideration of student placement is made taking the following into account:
-
Class size
-
Academic ability / Learning needs
-
Gender mix
-
Peer groups
-
Student requests
-
Parent requests
-
Sibling divisions
-
Behavioural needs
-
Special family circumstances
-
Social or emotional needs
-
Cohort dynamics
On Wednesday 6 December, students will have an opportunity to meet their 2024 teacher and their new class mates. This transition process aims to supports students to feel confident and positive about the new year ahead over the summer holiday break.
SEQTA Engage
As we continue to move forward with our use of the SEQTA Learning Management Tool, the End of Year student reports will be released to parents using the SEQTA Engage App. To ensure this transition is smooth and seamless for all families, please ensure that all email addresses for both parents have been provided and are up to date. As the term progresses, families will receive an invitation email with log on details to set up their SEQTA engage app so that the reports can be released in a digital format.
Traffic on Elizabeth Avenue
The West Torrens Council has been monitoring traffic in the afternoon over the past fortnight. They have communicated to the school that they will be targeting cars parked in the Kiss and Drop zone from 2:30pm. This area is a two minute pick up zone, NOT a parking area. Fines may be issued if you are seen to be parking in the area for over two minutes even if you are waiting in the vehicle. The idea of the Kiss and Drop zone is to encourage a continual flow of traffic.
Suggestions for assisting the traffic flow around the broader community include:
- Park a little distance away from the school gate and walk to pick up your children
- Organise a designated pick up space away from the school and traffic and your child could walk to you
- If you are wanting to use the Kiss and Drop zone, wait until 3:10pm when the traffic is lighter. The area is supervised by staff until 3:15pm, so the children will not be waiting alone
- If you live within close proximity to the school, consider walking or riding a bike to school
We thank you for your continued support and cooperation.
Land development Update
As previously communicated, it was hoped that the works to develop the land on Anzac Highway were to begin during October. This was delayed due to the availability of contractors. Works will now begin in mid January and are due for completion at the beginning of March. We look forward to this extra playspace for the children.
The Leadership Team
Plympton Parish & School Community Lunch
Last Sunday, 5th November, the community hosted a shared lunch in the St John the Baptist Centre following the 10am Mass. The community brought in a variety of food from their cultural heritage. It was a wonderful occasion enjoyed by all who attended.
Sacramental Program 2024
If your child has received their Sacrament of Baptism and is eight years or older, they can receive the Sacraments of Confirmation and Holy Communion. The Sacraments are sacred actions of the Church which bring about encounters with God in people’s lives. They are wonderful celebrations that bring individuals closer to God and to the community. The parish has opened enrolments (please see further infomation below) and you may contact the parish office plymptonparish@stjohnpl.catholic.edu.au or 8293 6600 for more details.
Reception & Year 1 Mass
Next Wednesday, the Reception and Year 1 community will host their Open Morning, inviting parents into the classrooms. Afterwards, families are welcome to join the parish for Mass at 9:30am followed by a shared morning tea.

For further information, please see a letter from Fr Denis Ssemuju here.
They shall grow not old,
as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them,
nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun
and in the morning
We will remember them.
Lest we forget

2023 has been a busy year in the Counselling space. A very common theme this year has been parent separation, divorce and conflict. Being separated parents can be very hard work and takes an emotional toll on all parties, especially children. 'Because it's for the kids' is a booklet offering support, ideas and wisdom to help you help your child/ren cope through the changes.
Please find a copy of the booklet here.

St John the Baptist School provides a safe environment for all while valuing the partnership between school and home.
As a Catholic community, we welcome and value volunteers. To be able to volunteer, and/or attend at other times throughout the school year, we ask that you hold a current Catholic Police Check (parents/caregivers attending excursions, reading in class, helping in class, attending community events), a current Responding to Risks of Harm, Abuse and Neglect in Education and Care for Volunteers certificate, have completed the volunteers application package and your COVID vaccination certificate.
A Catholic Police Check for volunteers is free for our current parents and caregivers. Application Forms are available in our school office.
This process ensures we maintain a child safe environment. To avoid disappointment, we encourage you to apply for a Catholic Police Check through the school office as soon as possible.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us at the school office on 8218 3300 or email Francis Schulz on fschulz@stjohnpl.catholic.edu.au .
Children’s oral health is important. Unfortunately, dental decay is still a significant problem for many South Australian children. Dental decay can affect a child’s wellbeing and quality of life.
It can lead to pain and many lost hours at school – however it is also a preventable disease.
All children from 0-18 are welcome to attend SA Dental and there are no out-of-pocket costs for most families. However, we know that only around 45% of eligible children are accessing dental care and many families are unaware that SA Dental is available to them.
